Catch Art Fever During Classes at Finer Things

There was a lot of chatter and laughter, but that was in between moments of real concentration. Janis Brunner was leading a class all about “Yoga for the Mind” through an art technique called Zentangle at Finer Things in Brownsburg, Indiana. With markers in hand and lots of examples of “doodles,” everyone in the class was creating a real piece of artwork – and skill level didn’t really matter. That’s part of the beauty of the classes that Finer Things owner, Melissa Blackshear, is bringing to Hendricks County in her Brownsburg shop filled with local artists' work amid collectibles and vintage finds. She caught me a little off guard when she said, “It’s not just carrying the art and selling the art. I love to watch people in classes catch the art fever.” The classes are artistic – but not all about art. They offer classes in floral arranging, pin weaving, simple upholstery, silk painting as well as traditional art and lesser-known art techniques like the Zentangle. Two things come into play with the classes offered: First, Blackshear explains that there is a “less than beginners skill level for many of the classes.” (Ha! That would be me in many of them – and that means less intimidation...) The second point is that some of the classes being scheduled are the result of a customer request – like the upholstery class. While some may think that isn’t art, it is artistic. The result of all the classes can be something you wear, something you look at or, in this event, something you sit on. No matter what, the result is something you take home and enjoy – as well as enjoy the fun in the class with others and maybe learn a new skill as well. If you want to try something a little different, take a look at the variety of upcoming classes. You can either stop by the shop and put your name on the e-mail list or you can drop by the Finer Things Facebook page. On the Events tab, you will see all the confirmed classes. The cost depends on the class (some may be held in several sessions), the materials and the instructor, and start as low as $5 or $10. While you're there, you may want to pick up a Rural Routes to Main Street Cultural Trail Guidebook, to check out some other places in Hendricks and Morgan counties to experience art. There is such fun in being creative and trying something new – or practicing something that intrigues you. So sign up and explore something new today! Finer Things1032 E.
