Even though the weather is getting colder, there's no reason to overlook the parks of Hendricks County. In fact, parks departments throughout the county remain as busy as North Pole elves, bringing you holiday events for your entire family to enjoy throughout the season.

Let's take a look at 10 of these upcoming holiday programs in our parks.

Holiday Craft Fair

Washington Township Parks & Recreation kicks things off with their Holiday Craft Fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Pavilion Center in Washington Township Park in Avon.

The Pavilion Center provides a beautiful backdrop full of vendors with handmade items for sale allowing shoppers to find unique gifts for those on their holiday list.

This craft fair is free to attend.

Learn all about wild turkeys at Sodalis Nature Park in Plainfield on Nov. 18.Wild Turkey Wranglers

Remember when there used to be a holiday about a month before Christmas called Thanksgiving? We hardly hear anything about it anymore now that Santa, Inc. starts setting up shop in our consciousness in October.

But Hendricks County Parks & Recreation hasn't forgotten about Thanksgiving. In fact, they'd like to teach you about wild turkeys just ahead of the holiday at 11 a.m., Nov. 18 at Sodalis Nature Park in Plainfield.

Come to their Wild Turkey Wranglers program and take a walk around the park with one of their park naturalists while learning about the bird that nearly became our national symbol. Try your hand at turkey calls and see if you can draw in a rafter of wild turkeys. (See? You've already learned what a group of turkeys is called!)

This program is free to attend.

Winter Nature Crafts

Hendricks County Parks & Recreation can meet your Christmas needs, too, with their Winter Nature Crafts program at 1 p.m. Nov. 18 at McCloud Nature Park near North Salem.

Get a jump start on your holiday decorations or gifts by using pine cones, acorns and other items found in nature to make ornaments and tree decorations for your home. These also make great gifts!

This program costs $6 per project, and up to two people can work on one project. Click here to register in advance by Nov. 16.

Thousands of lights make the Winterland Holiday Light Show in Danville a very popular attraction.Winterland Holiday Light Show

Danville Parks & Recreation brings the mother of all drive-through holiday light shows to Ellis Park every year, and this year's Winterland Holiday Light Show opens at 6 p.m. Nov. 24, immediately after Christmas on the Square.

Pack the whole family in the car and take as many laps around Ellis Park as you'd like to enjoy the thousands upon thousands of holiday lights. This is the 20th year of this awesome display, and Danville Parks & Recreation is celebrating with several new light displays.

Winterland is open daily through Dec. 30 (closed on Christmas Day) beginning at 6 p.m. and closing at 9 p.m. on Sundays through Thursdays, and at 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

The Christmas Under The Stars Parade in Brownsburg is a lot of fun.Christmas Under the Stars

An event that my family enjoys a lot is the Christmas Under the Stars parade that will take place through Brownsburg at 6 p.m. Dec. 2.

Brownsburg Parks & Recreation organizes all sorts of fun parade floats that pass through town, and kids will want to bring plastic bags or some other receptacle to collect the candy that will come flying out of the floats as they pass by.

The parade ends with a grandiose entrance by Santa Claus, and then the festivities move to the Brownsburg Town Hall for the Brownsburg Tree Lighting.

This event is free to attend.

Stemware Painting in the Park

On Dec. 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Avon Parks & Recreation hosts Stemware Painting in the Park inside Avon Town Hall, where local artist Flory Phillips will lead participants in painting winter scenes on stemware that can be used as wine glasses or candle holders.

These will make great holiday decorations in your home, or a special handcrafted holiday gift for someone you love!

Sensory Santa

Sensory Santa, a really cool program that Washington Township Parks & Recreation hosts annually, returns from 9 a.m. to noon, Dec. 9 at the Pavilion Center in Avon's Washington Township Park.

Sensory Santa gives children with special needs the opportunity to do activities and have their
picture taken with Santa and listen to a story by Mrs. Claus in a calm, less intimidating environment, resulting in a healthy, positive holiday experience.
