I’m a fan of trivia and find myself saying to friends and family, “Did you know?” Maybe I watch too much “Jeopardy,” but I do get a lot of enjoyment from finding out things I didn’t know about a town or city. With the help from the wonderful and hardworking team at Visit Hendricks County, here are 10 things you may not know about Hendricks County. If you haven’t visited some of these towns, places or events, be sure to mark them on your list of things to do in 2014. Work on Your Serve on Clay Courts Danville is home to the only public clay tennis courts in Indiana. You can find the clay courts at Ellis Park in Danville, also home to the Rosemary Helton Open Tennis Tournament. There’s Only One Lizton The town of Lizton owns the distinction of being the only Lizton in the world. While you’re in Lizton, visit J's Taco Inn and Lizton Dairy Bar. Tacos and ice cream treats -- doesn’t that sound wonderful? Promise Monsters Did you know that these scary but cute stuffed monsters originated right here in Hendricks County. These toys, which are beginning to gain a national following, can still be found right here in Hendricks County at Wilbur's Lincolnwood Toy Store in Brownsburg. Plenty to Celebrate in Plainfield Plainfield is celebrating 175 years in 2014. You’ll find a good deal to do, see and eat in Plainfield, which is only a few minutes’ drive from the Indianapolis International Airport. We Support Films and Filmmakers The Indiana Short Film Festival held every year in Danville in October is the only event dedicated to short films in Central Indiana. Need for Speed Hendricks County is home to racing, including Belardi Auto Racing, Don Schumacher Racing, John Force Racing and many more race teams and ancillary race-related businesses. My dad is looking forward to May 17 and 18 when he can attend the first annual Mayberry in the Midwest Festival. This inaugural festival (thanks to the Mayberry Cafe and Downtown Danville) will be a celebration of Mayberry and filled with events, games and even opportunities to meet a few cast member impressionists. Craft Beer Craft Beer is gaining more and more fans in Indiana. Hendricks County is home to 3 craft microbreweries: Black Swan Brewpub in Plainfield, Cutters Brewing Co. in Avon and Three Pints Brewpub in Plainfield. The Super Bowl is right around the corner, so here’s a perfect opportunity to try some of Hendricks County’s best craft beer! Visit the Water Park in Winter Got a case of cabin fever? I know I do! It might be too cold to go outdoors, but Splash Island in Plainfield has a small indoor waterpark.
