Looking for a simple way to cool off, keep the kids entertained and enjoy a little indulgence afterward?
Hendricks County, Indiana, has some hidden (and not-so-hidden) gems where you can splash in a creek and then treat yourself to a local sweet spot nearby.
Here are four fun pairings I came up with to try this summer.
McCloud Nature Park & Lizton Dairy Bar
We love exploring McCloud Nature Park. They offer a variety of trails and programs, and you can stomp in Big Walnut Creek. While you can explore on your own, they also host creek stomping events.
After you're done there, you can check out the Lizton Dairy Bar just 10 minutes away. They offer the classic swirl ice cream option, as well as lunch and dinner foods. Additionally, you can use their drive-through, which is very helpful when the kids are tired from exploring the park.
Hummel Park & Frigid Frog
One of our favorite spots to go creek stomping can be found in Plainfield at Guilford Township's Hummel Park. Play at the playgrounds, splash in the splash pad and then walk down to the creek to play in the water, skip rocks and more.
After you've cooled off, you can stop by Frigid Frog on Main Street in Plainfield and enjoy ice cream, shaved ice and more!

Washington Township Park & Frost Bite
Washington Township Park in Avon offers a variety of amenities throughout the park, but the lower level offers paved trails along a beautiful nature path. Several points along the trail offer access to the water. We always love wading in and looking for critters, rocks and shells.
After your Washington Township Park creek stomping, head over to Frost Bite in Avon to grab a sweet treat. You can park and walk up, or use the drive-through to enjoy on your way home.
Ellis Park & Danville Dips
Ellis Park in Danville is full of family fun, and the shallow creek on the east side of the park is perfect for some gentle creek stomping. Look for smooth rocks, splash in the water or relax in the cool shade while your kids explore.
This spot is great on those extra sunny days because the mature trees provide ample shade. There's also a nearby playground and Gill Family Aquatic Center!
After your creek stomping exploration, run over to Danville Dips and grab ice cream or even lunch! They offer a variety of flavors, and our kids love their color-changing spoons. A perfect combo!
Tips Before You Go
- Keep an eye on the water levels after a heavy rain — safety first!
- Bring towels, sunscreen and a change of clothes — we've often had to change clothes before getting in the van.
- Like all park explorations, follow park rules and leave it better than you found it.
- Check out our local park's events and attend an organized creek stomp, where a guide will lead you on an exploration of the creek!
