As a mother of three children under the age of 13, it’s not easy finding a day to spend out and about in the county. However, when we do, I’m looking for budget-friendly fun for the entire family, and there’s plenty out there to enjoy here in Hendricks County, Indiana.
Every so often I even schedule a family fun day, making sure to hit certain spots throughout the county that will pique each person’s interest and allow everyone to check out something new. Based on that insider knowledge, I put together a day-long itinerary for a family in Avon, Indiana.
Just one of four major towns in Hendricks County, Avon offers a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities, making even those rainy days fun.
Pecar Park and Pock Park
Start the day outdoors, while it’s still cool, and visit Washington Township’s Pecar and Pock parks; two great parks in one. All three kids are fans of Jack and Diane, Pecar’s African spurred tortoises, along with other critters in the Nature Center.
There’s a large playground with a climbing rock, swings and slides, and they can spend hours trying their hand at different challenging courses along the way.
When we’re done there, I like to head on over to Pock Park (entrance is located within Pecar Park) and take a nature hike. We love to explore, spot small animals and visit the log cabin dating back to the 1800s.
Pecar Park is located at 5203 E. County Road 150 North, Avon.
Lunch Time
We love to stop in at La Hacienda Mexican restaurant in Avon any time of the day.
My two younger ones love the nachos with cheese and salsa, while my teen goes for the Grilled Chicken Quesadillas or the Pork Fajitas with onions, tomatoes and bell peppers.
The family-owned business delivers a home-like atmosphere. And the smell of freshly cooked tortillas and spices are simply amazing. Plus, the staff is always friendly.
La Hacienda is located at 7841 E. U.S. 36, Avon.

Time to Create
As the heat rises and we’re ready to go inside, visiting The Tie Dye Lab in Avon is always a special treat.
The friendly staff will walk you through the process of creating a unique and creative piece. But because it’s also a DIY experience, you get to take home cool T-shirts, socks, bandannas or other clothing every time for all of our hard (and fun) work.
The best part is, there’s no cleanup afterward as the great staff there takes care of all that for you!
The Tie Dye Lab is located at 8100 E. U.S. 36, Suite L, Avon.
The Fudge Kettle
Just a couple doors down from the Tie Dye Lab, this county gem just moved to their new location in Avon, and they have Boba drinks.
If you’re not familiar, the popular drink is made with tea or lemonade and mixed with flavor infused pearls or “bubbles” in the drink.
My three enjoy selecting different flavors each time such as blueberry and raspberry or peach and strawberry. The possibilities are endless. We will have trouble getting out of The Fudge Kettle with only a Boba drink for each person however, as the rest of the shop is bursting with all varieties of candy and tasty fresh fudge one could want.
The Fudge Kettle is located at 8100 E. U.S. 36, Suite J, Avon.
RC Race Track
Winding down for the evening, I like to pack a picnic dinner and check out one of the many outdoor activities offered around town.
We enjoy going to Avon Town Hall Park's free remote control race track. Trak 36 remains the only one of its kind in Hendricks County.
So, when the weather is nice, we meet up with friends in the community, and friendly competition ensues.
Also available for the little ones is a playground and plenty of picnic tables for a quick bite. The park also boasts a disc golf course, outdoor ping pong tables and much more.
The family ends the evening having spent quality time together and making memories that last forever.
Avon Town Hall Park is located at 6570 E. U.S. 36, Avon.
