It is our belief at Visit Hendricks County that you haven't truly experienced this area unless you've been here in the fall when the leaves begin to change, a slight chill arrives and our festival season ramps up.
In an effort to help our wonderful visitors plan that perfect getaway, we have put together itineraries showcasing specific weekends this fall.
Kick off the fall season with some festive fun while helping Avon celebrate its past Sept. 26-28.
The Avon Community Heritage Festival always provides plenty of fall fun with a parade beginning at 10 a.m. Sept. 27 at Kingsway Christian Church. Then, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Washington Township Park is the place to be with games, food, children's activities, the finals of a talent show, arts and crafts and other exhibits before ending the event with a fall fireworks show.
If you love dressing up for Halloween, we would also suggest checking out the Avon Zombie Walk from 1-4 p.m. on that same Saturday. I mean is there anything more fun than masquerading like a zombie along U.S. 36 for a good cause? The event is free to participate in and begins at the Party City in Avon. All donations and money raised from the event will go to feed the hungry.
If you are going to be in Avon anyway, we would highly recommend visiting Monster Mini Golf especially around Halloween time. This 18-hole, glow-in-the-dark minature golf experience is fun for the entire family.
Three popular fall mazes have opened to the public and will remain open every weekend through Oct. 31. The Prairie Maze at McCloud Nature Park in North Salem is just one of many ways to enjoy that nature preserve.
The ever-popular Beasley Orchard's Corn Maze in Danville provides a puzzling adventure that can take anywhere from 30-60 minutes to solve depending on if you answer questions within the maze correctly or incorrectly.
Finally, a new fall tradition has opened in Brownsburg -- the Hogan Farms Pumpkin Patch, Corn Maze & Animal Experience. The name pretty much says it all as this is a fall wonderland with plenty to do and see for families.
Since this particular weekend itinerary has a definite Avon theme, we figured we would give you some of our favorite Avon dining options in case you want to get away from the festival food.
- Fine-dining: Our favorite in Avon would definitely be Charbonos, which has a little bit of everything from pizzas to pastas and even steak and seafood.
- Family: You can't go wrong with Randelli's Gourmet Pizza and its train theme that extends throughout its menu, on the walls and even above your heads as a toy train circles the restaurant.
- Ethnic: If Vietnamese, Thai or Mediterranenan inspired menus are more to your liking, Avon has that, too. Three of our favorites depending on what you're looking for are Pho 36, Thai Lanna and Mediterranenan Grill.
