After more than 20 years in public education, Casey Smitherman shifted gears and put her passion for home decor into action. Casey has always had a knack for making spaces feel welcoming, and she has flipped a few houses over the years.
But recently she decided to take it to the next level using the proceeds from her last house flip to open a home decor business.
Inspired Home and Gifts opened in September 2019 in Brownsburg. And then in March 2020 the pandemic hit. But Casey's dedication and creative business sense along with her loyal and growing following are proving to be a recipe for success.
Inside the Inspired Home and Gifts storefront, you will find unique and trendy home decor, furniture, candles, jewelry, antiques, and more. All artfully displayed in such a way you can picture how the items might look in your own home to add a sense of style and comfort.
Casey hopes her customers don't just make a purchase, but that they will feel at home in the store as they gain ideas for their own spaces. To create that at-home feel at IHG, Casey often serves up food samples, hot cider, mimosas, and more.
Ironically, some of her best selling items are actually gourmet food products available at the store. The Soberdough beer bread, Good Times Slushie mixes and a line of soup mixes are popular items customers come in to purchase again and again. I recently tried the Creamy Jalantro Soup and I must say it was delish!
Succulents are also all the rage right now and a popular purchase by many IHG customers. With new inventory arriving nearly every week and seasonal displays appearing frequently, shoppers will always find something new at IHG as well as creative ideas for making their spaces feel a bit more like home.
But for those who need a bit more help creating the home of their dreams, Casey also offers a variety of in-home design help for just about any budget.
Contact Casey to schedule a 90-minute consultation, and she will walk through your home providing suggestions on paint colors and decor items to help create the exact look you desire.
For those with a bigger budget and who want the full-service treatment, Casey works with customers on complete home remodels of kitchens, baths and more.
If you are just looking for the perfect accent piece of furniture, ask Casey to show you her custom fabrics and soon you will have a comfy living space that is uniquely you.
I could use a bit of interior design assistance myself, so I asked Casey about the latest trends in home decor. She shared that the farmhouse chic look Joanna Gaines made so popular is still in style, but now people are looking to add a bold pop of color to that look. And Casey can help you do that!
Due to COVID, the storefront had to close from March through July, 2020, that was devastating to many small businesses, especially new ones. But Casey found a unique way to keep her business afloat despite the shutdown. She started doing one-hour Facebook Live events every Thursday at 8 p.m. EST.
During this online interactive event, Casey, often joined by her daughters, showcases 50-70 new and unique products as well as last-chance clearance items from her inventory. Viewers can post questions and comment to claim items for purchase.
Behind the scenes, Casey's husband, known as Spreadsheet Steve, tracks all the activity and follows up with an invoice and payment link for each customer. Items are then hand-delivered to the homes of local shoppers and shipped to those further away, with no shipping costs added.
The Facebook Live events have been a hit with locals and are now gaining traction with non-residents as well, with more than 100 shoppers tuning in every week. Started out of necessity, the Facebook Live events continued even after the storefront reopened in July, and Casey has no plans to end this popular shopping option any time soon.
Whether customers choose to peruse home decor inside the shop, schedule a design consultation in their home or tune in to the Facebook Live events, Casey hopes she can help people feel a bit less overwhelmed as they transform their home into a relaxing retreat.
And she feels blessed to help others accomplish just that.
