The kids may be back in school, but summer isn’t over! You still have plenty of time to get out of the house (and office) and enjoy this beautiful Indiana season. Make use of the later hours of the day by enjoying some of these things to do outside under the stars: Camp out with your family: Spend the whole night under the stars during the Family Campout Night at Danville’s Ellis Park on Aug. 9. Hurry—registration ends Aug. 8. A park naturalist gives the crowd some tips for viewing the Perseid Meteor Shower at McCloud Nature Park. Watch for shooting stars: Watch for meteors during the Perseids Meteor Shower at McCloud Nature Park on Aug. 10 in North Salem. The special program officially begins at 9 p.m., but come early to walk the trails of this beautiful park before the sun sets, and bring a picnic dinner.  I went to the event last year and can attest to it being worth your while. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better view of the sky in Hendricks County. Learn about the night sky: Can’t make it for the Perseids Meteor Shower on Aug. 10? McCloud Nature Park hosts sky seminars and viewings with the Indiana Astronomical Society one Saturday each month. Telescopes will be on hand for your enhanced viewing pleasure. Visit a local festival: Some coming up include North Salem Old Fashion Days Aug. 31-Sept. 2; the St. Malachy Country Fair in Brownsburg, Sept. 20-21; the Quaker Day Festival in Plainfield, Sept. 20-21; and the Avon Community Heritage Festival, Sept. 28. Check out our events calendar for listings and details. Dine on a patio: Grab an outdoor dinner at one of Hendricks County’s great local restaurants. We have many reviews of dining opportunities here to help you work up an appetite. The U.S. Nationals at night is a sight to behold. See racing under the lights: You can catch a variety of racing at Lucas Oil Raceway. But the track's signature event, the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, is coming up Aug. 28–Sept. 2. My favorite time to watch this incredible show is on Saturday and Sunday nights as the darkness provides an added bonus when the fire shooting from the exhausts of these massive machines becomes visible while they scream down the drag strip. Listen to live music: In addition to the great festivals, Chateau Thomas Winery in Plainfield offers Music on the Veranda on Fridays from 7-10 p.m. through Sept. 20, and the Coachman Restaurant & Lounge in Plainfield hosts live music on its deck on Friday and Saturday nights from 8 to midnight. The Lizton Dairy Bar is a great place to get some cold ice cream on a hot night! Cool off with a frozen treat: Is there anything better than grabbing a cool treat on a pleasant summer evening? Hendricks County has plenty of great ice cream, frozen yogurt, or shaved-ice destinations. Our own Aimee recently highlighted several. See some hot cars: Satisfy your taste for nostalgia — and hot cars — at the First Friday Cruise-In, held each month on the historic Hendricks County Courthouse Square in downtown Danville. Have a night on the town: Metropolis, Hendricks County’s outdoor mall in Plainfield, features multiple restaurants —including several with outdoor seating — great shopping, and an 18-screen movie theater. Metropolis is a great date-night destination. The list doesn't end here! What are some of your favorite things to do under the stars in Hendricks County?
