Summer is finally here which makes it the perfect time to plan your charity walks, 5Ks and marathons! Lucky for you there are plenty of options just down the road from Indy. Whether you are a walker looking to get some fresh air or a highly competitive runner ready to break records, Hendricks County, Indiana, has many events to help you stay healthy this year.

Earlier this year, many races were converting to virtual-only events to ensure participants stayed healthy and safe. This trend will likely continue with some events this year, but not all!  Now that Indiana is reopening and guidelines are easing, it’s a little easier for runners to gather, compete and socialize. I don’t know about you, but I definitely miss the energy from racing in person and can’t wait to get back out there!

As I was planning my 2020 race schedule, I stumbled across some awesome events! Over the past few years I’ve been trying to run in as many Hendricks County 5Ks as I can. I was pleasantly surprised to discover there are still some that I have not tried. Below is a list of the events I’m most excited for this year. Make sure to check back for updates as events are added, rescheduled, canceled or changed.

With many multi-day events throughout the summer, runners can choose to participate in some or all of the runs. All participants receive an event T-shirt and those who do 7+ runs will get a commemorative sticker to show off their accomplishment. As of right now, there is still time to get your seven runs in!

Registration is $35 per person or $100 for a family of four. Proceeds from the series benefit local parks by helping the Hendricks County Parks & Recreation Department keep trails and public spaces looking great. This event is a virtual series that encourages participants to complete runs at local parks.

Fair on the Square 5k, Half Marathon & Marathon (In-Person)This year's Fair on the Square will host a marathon alternative to the canceled Boston Marathon.

Looking for an alternative to the canceled Boston Marathon? Danville has you covered!

When: Sept. 12, 2020 at 7:15 a.m. (Marathon), 8 a.m. (Half Marathon), 8:15 a.m.(5k)

Where: Hendricks County Courthouse Square in Danville

Details: In its ninth year, Fair on the Square has seen some major changes take place. Due to the cancellation of the in-person Boston Marathon, a USATF-certified marathon has been added, using a two-loop course as a 2021 BQ qualifier. This is perfect for those who have been training and had their marathon cancelled or want to run a live race for their Boston Marathon virtual submission. This provides those who are registered for the 2020 Boston Virtual Marathon an opportunity to log their miles safely during the appropriate dates (Sept. 7-14). Learn more about this on the Fair on the Square event site.

Along with the full marathon, the Fair on the Square will offer the typical 5K and half marathon distances as they have in previous years. All participants will enjoy a scenic course, finisher medal, fair food & one free craft beer in the beer garden.

Registration for the 5K starts at $30/person, increasing after Aug. 31. The half marathon is currently $65/person while the "Boston to Danville" Marathon is $85/person. The half and full marathons will both see a price increase after Sept. 6.

COVID-19 Update: Masks will be required during check-in, when using restrooms in Hinkle Fieldhouse and during awards. The event organizers encourage all teams and participants to follow the Governor's directive when not running. No masks are required during the run.
