Last year when I heard the circus was coming to town I just couldn't help myself. The idea of stealing glances at my daughters' young faces as they beheld the magic was irresistible, and the mental pictures I took the night of the performance lived up to that parenting fantasy.

It was truly a wonderful show, filled with talent that blew me away with a message of hope and a heavy dash of whimsy. I talked about it for days after, and tell you now so you too might enjoy a little bit of magic this September at The Shops at Perry Crossing in Hendricks County, Indiana.

Why It's Great

Clowning around at Vernardos Circus

This show is geared for all ages, and every member of our family had fun. The tent -- custom designed in Italy for this very show -- feels intimate, and no seat is a bad one, though you can enhance your experience with the various ticket levels.

You won't find animals at this circus, but rather enthusiastic music and talented performers from across the world. Dubbed, "The American Circus with the Heart of a Broadway Show," we were all on our feet cheering by the time it was curtain call.

The Talent

Under the Big Top at The Vernardos Circus

A former Ringling Brothers ringmaster, Kevin Venardos has developed a show filled with varied and incredible cast members. I never knew I would be impressed with a woman who could spin a table with her feet at breakneck speed, but once you see it for yourself it no longer seems an odd thing to enjoy.

The aerialists were impressively daring and lithe, the acrobatic strong men were a sight to behold, and the clown kept the party going, even involving a few willing audience members. The lineup this year will include some of these same performers, with new additions like trampolining and hand balancing.

Insider Tips

Here are a few things that will make your visit to the big top even more enjoyable:

  • Dress for the day's weather, as the tent is not climate-controlled
  • Plan to arrive early to find your favorite view -- seating is general admission
  • The snacks are worth it, but order your popcorn and cotton candy when you purchase tickets; they make it fresh daily and avoid food waste by having a plan for how much is needed
  • Get in line for face painting as soon as you can; during intermission the performers are who do the painting, but we missed out because they had to get back to the stage!
