Overview
Inspired by the phenomenon of Elvis Presley’s induction into the army, Bye Bye Birdie tells the story of a small town’s excitement when a famous rock star comes to visit.
Bye Bye Birdie is a classic American musical that first premiered on Broadway in 1960. With a book by Michael Stewart, music by Charles Strouse, and lyrics by Lee Adams, this lively and comedic show has captivated audiences for over six decades.
The story revolves around Conrad Birdie, a fictional rock and roll superstar who has been drafted into the army. Before he leaves, his manager, Albert Peterson, concocts a plan to boost his career and say goodbye to his teenage fans. The plan is to have Conrad give “one last kiss” to a lucky fan on The Ed Sullivan Show, which is reminiscent of Elvis’ famous hip-shaking performance.
