8 Indoor Activities for the Kids in Hendricks County
Published on
I am grateful for the many indoor play options in Hendricks County, Indiana, providing creative spaces for kids to play.
Whether it's a cold winter day, a scorching hot day during the summer or a dreary day, here are eight of my favorite places for indoor fun, plus a few bonus ones to add to your list.
1. Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park
With trampolines everywhere and a variety of things to do, your whole family will love Sky Zone. You can play Sky Zone Dodgeball or try out your basketball trampoline skills with SkySlam.
Sky Zone Plainfield has two newer attractions -- Wipe Out and its own Ninja Warrior Course. Sky Zone also offers facility rentals and special nights and programs, such as Little Leaper, which provides scheduled weekend times for young kids and their caregivers.
2. Art Studios
Art studios provide a great activity during all kinds of weather. They offer a creative outlet where we don't have to clean up the mess!
Options include:
- Brightly Art Studio in Brownsburg hosts classes and open craft cafe hours. They also offer seasonal classes and camps that go along with the local school's schedule.
- uPaint Pottery Studio in Plainfield boasts a kid-friendly, paint-your-own experience and themed events throughout the year.
- Children's Art Classes in Brownsburg offers 9-month Studio Art Curriculum for students ages 5–18, along with numerous specialty workshops — especially during the summer months.
All of these places also offer private party options.
3. Slick City Action Park
Slick City in Brownsburg can best be described as an indoor waterpark without the water with thrilling indoor slides, air courts and fun for all ages. Enjoy attractions like Fast Lane, Royal Flush, Sport Air Courts and more.
Our older kids love the slides, and our youngest gets to explore Junior Jungle, which is designed for kids 5 & under only and offers a soft play zone with mini slides, climbing obstacle and padded play areas.
4. Play, Bowl & Game
Brownsburg has a couple of standout spots for bowling gaming and virtual reality:
- Press Play Gaming Lounge offers numerous virtual reality areas, foam wars, three-point shootout and more! They also have a Beam system that projects games onto the floor, which is ideal for younger visitors.
- Pinheads has quickly become a local favorite. They have arcade games, a state-of-the-art bowling experience and a full restaurant, making it a great family outing. On Thursdays, they have half-price arcade games, which makes saying yes so much easier!
Both locations offer food, allowing visitors to stay and play longer.
5. Urban Air Adventure Park
Urban Air in Plainfield is filled with a variety of ways to play for all ages! It is the ultimate indoor playground for the whole family, offering a climbing wall, indoor zipline, laser tag, bumper cars and more!
This is one place our kids have asked to go back to multiple times. To ensure all visitors can enjoy the space, Urban Air offers sensory-friendly hours. Check their website for their current sensory-friendly play hours.
6. Royal Theater
The historic Royal Theater, unlike most theaters, caters to kids and families with its single screen. Every ticket is just $5, whether you're age 8, 88 or anywhere in between. The concessions also cost a fraction of what other theaters charge.
We took our kids to see their first big movie there, and it was such a great experience. The kids loved seeing the old projector and learning how they would show the movies on the screen.
7. Richard A. Carlucci Recreation & Aquatic Center
Plainfield's Recreation and Aquatic Center offers so much! There is a running track, exercise equipment and fitness classes. There are basketball courts, too.
To enjoy water year round, you can visit the Indoor Splash Island Water Park which is a part of the Recreation and Aquatic Center. The zero entry pool is a perk for those with young kids, and they also offer a slide and play area.
8. Kids Empire
Finding indoor spaces to climb and play during the colder months has been a lifesaver for our family. Kids Empire at The Shops at Perry Crossing features multi-level adventure zones with tunnels, ball pits, climbing walls and a dedicated toddler area.
A bonus perk: the admission fee includes re-entry for the entire day. So, we can take a break from playing and find a snack or lunch at one of the great restaurants nearby, then go back and keep playing!
Bonus: Indoor Fun For Free!
I love finding places our family of five can explore on a budget, and I am grateful for the many free options! Several local churches offer free indoor play spaces, including:
- The Hideout in Brownsburg offers space for kids to climb and play as well as a few toys. There's space for adults to sit and visit as well. There is no admission fee but they do offer special events like art and yoga for a small fee.
- Plainfield Christian Church in Plainfield offers their indoor play place The Treehouse on Tuesdays or Thursdays.
- The Center at Northview Church in Danville offers an indoor playscape, a turf field and meeting rooms. Fields Coffee is also in the space. So, you can grab a coffee while the kids play.
