Hilligoss Bakery is a Must For Any Doughnut Lover

Published on August 3, 2023

In 1974, Mike and Linda Hilligoss took over ownership of a bakery that had shut down on the south side of Brownsburg.

The husband-and-wife duo named their new venture, Hilligoss Bakery, and handled all parts of the business for a year-and-a-half before hiring staff.

As they say, the rest is history. For 49 years, Hilligoss Bakery has become a local landmark on Main Street with a hometown feel and the best pastries and breads around.

What follows is what you need to know before making a visit to this slice of pastry paradise.

Donuts & Other Treats

Hilligoss is a full-service bakery known for its wide variety of donuts made fresh each morning. Glazed yeast donuts that melt in your mouth are among the most popular on the menu.

They are followed closely by cake donuts, cheese and pecan danishes and cinnamon rolls. The younger crowd typically selects the jelly and cream filled variety.

If you aren't in the mood for a donut, Hilligoss specializes in homemade chocolate chip, oatmeal and peanut butter cookies. They also offer seasonal treats, such as coconut macaroons and sugar cookies for the holidays.

Ask any local about Hilligoss Bakery and they are sure to remind you to arrive early before the favorites are gone.

Mike Hilligoss' hope each day is to sell out. However, if they don't sell out, twice a week, a gentleman has made it his mission to collect the leftover donuts and take them to a local homeless shelter.

Family Favorites

My daughter and I stopped by Hilligoss recently for an early morning breakfast treat. Of course, we paired a small bottle of milk with our donuts. Homemade donuts and milk = a fantastic summer breakfast.

And how did they taste?

Awesome! To me, a warm, freshly made, homemade donut remains one of the best treats ever.

While I am a fan of a classic glazed yeast donut, my 9-year-old daughter is more adventurous with her bakery selections. She had a tough time deciding between the jelly-filled variety and a cake donut with chocolate frosting, so she got both to savor.

Overall, she thought both donuts were delicious, but the standout was the cake donut with chocolate frosting. She loved that it was warm and topped with gooey chocolate frosting.

I definitely plan to return soon and pick up a dozen donuts for the rest of my family to sample. Maybe I’ll pick up a few cinnamon rolls, too!
