How a Chair Is Opening Hendricks County Parks to More People
Published on
Most people head to a park and just go. Others sit on a bench or wait in the car because getting there doesn’t mean you can experience it.
For many, the outdoors isn’t the problem; it’s having the ability to fully be part of it. That’s where the right tools can change everything — like the Hendricks County Parks Department is doing with accessibility.
A Game-Changing Ride
Growing up with Spina Bifida, trails — paved or not — were never really an option for me. I got to change that recently by trying the Grit Freedom Chair at W.S. Gibbs Memorial Park, and within minutes, I went from “we’ll see” to “let’s go.”
This chair made it possible to experience something new, fun and long overdue. It’s smooth, intuitive and opens terrain in a way a regular chair just doesn’t.
How Did It Do Off Paved Trails?
I started on paved paths thanks to soggy trails and a little chill in the air, but I wasn’t about to stay there. I’m Gen X, and we grew up on The Dukes of Hazzard television show…so, solely staying on a paved path was never going to happen.
The second I hit the grass, the Grit Freedom Chair proved its point: smooth, steady and way easier than expected.
Why It Matters
This isn’t just about getting outside; it’s about being part of the outdoors and enjoying what every able-bodied person gets to enjoy. It’s the difference between watching from the sidelines and being right there, moving, exploring and making memories alongside everyone else.
I've already told my daughter that I can't wait to go back to Gibbs Park or even McCloud Nature Park, another county park where the chair can be used, and try it again. It was so much fun!
How To Request The Chair
The freedom chair is available for two-hour rentals at W.S. Gibbs Memorial Park and McCloud Nature Park. Park officials ask that you reserve the chair at least two days in advance to ensure availability.
So, what are you waiting for? If you have mobility issues and want to experience parks like never before, try Hendricks County Parks' Grit Freedom Chair. Both parks are open from dawn to dusk daily.
Insider Tip: The parks department can secure walkers, wheelchairs and other personal items for visitors who use their Grit Freedom chair. Users just need to make that request when making the reservation.
