Experience A Holiday Tradition: Christmas on the Square in Danville Indiana
Published on
There’s something special about starting the holiday season in the heart of a small town.
The 19th annual Christmas on the Square in Downtown Danville, Indiana, is back from 4–7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 28, bringing holiday magic, lights, music and community together.
Bring your family and friends to see the town turn on the canopy of lights streaming down from every side of the Hendricks County Courthouse Square, officially kicking off the Christmas season.
What Is It?
Christmas on the Square has become one of Danville’s most anticipated traditions each year, organized by the Downtown Danville Partnership, the Town of Danville, and Hawkeye Storage.
Families return again and again for the festive atmosphere, the familiar charm and the excitement of seeing the Square transform into a Christmas scene straight out of a Hallmark movie. It’s a tradition that feels nostalgic and timeless.
For The Kids
Kids will have plenty to do at the free event, which features glitter tattoos, a live nativity scene, letters to Santa and a snowball fight. There will also be a Children’s Entrepreneurial Market, offering young makers and creatives a chance to sell their own products on the Square.
This event remains one of the most family-friendly celebrations of the season.
Tree Lighting
There's one moment everyone waits for each year in Danville. At 6:30 p.m., families will gather on the southeast corner of the square, across from Danville Dips, where Santa himself will flip the giant switch, illuminating the tree and the glittering canopy of lights.
It’s the official start of the holiday season in Danville, and seeing the Square glow instantly is something you don’t forget. It’s one of those moments that brings families, friends, neighbors and visitors together in the best way.
Festivities Galore & Holiday Decor
Expect twinkling lights strung high across the Square, carolers filling the streets with music and holiday cheer everywhere you turn. The Danville Fire Department will also be hosting a Chili Cook-Off, adding even more warmth to the evening (and some flavor, too).
The live nativity scene is always a popular attraction put on by the Danville United Methodist Church, and takes you through the very first Christmas.
Shopping, Dining & More
Plan to come early and stay late to browse the array of shops lining the square. They make it easy to grab dinner, warm drinks, sweet treats or get a jump on holiday shopping.
It’s a great chance to support local businesses while enjoying the festivities outside. Browse boutiques, order something cozy or just enjoy all the holiday spirit.
