Homeschool Field Trips Near Indianapolis
Published on
One of the benefits of choosing to homeschool is the ability to do some hands-on learning and exploration both at home and in the community. Hendricks County offers plenty of places that foster skills such as science, art, history and more.
Not only have I visited several of these locations with my own family and found them to be fun and educational, there’s also plenty of resources and field trip suggestions on the Indiana Association of Home Educators website.
History
Check out the history of Hendricks County through a visit to the Hendricks County Historical Museum in Danville and while there, walk a block over to check out the courthouse in the center of Danville’s Square.
Amo also has a fairly new Interurban History Museum, detailing the railroad and interurban depot along with historical artifacts from the West Hendricks County town. For more conversation starters, Plainfield and Danville are both home to historic districts with architecture, history and more.
Art and Creativity
Get your creativity flowing at Brightly Art Studio in Brownsburg and their Homeschool Art Club, paint ceramics at uPaint Pottery Studio in Plainfield or sign up for a class at Indiana Farmhouse in Danville.
Take the arts to the next level and catch a show at Hendricks Live!, exposing students to theatre, music and art, all in one space.
Hendricks County has a robust parks system, offering outdoor experiences at Pecar Park and Nature Center and McCloud Nature Center, to name a few.
Perhaps plan a day learning about animals and nature at a pig rescue farm, Oinking Acres Farm Rescue & Sanctuary, or schedule a tour of Montrose Farms and learn about the many advantages of alpacas.
Go as a family or schedule with a larger group to visit Beasley’s Orchard, learning more about life on a farm, picking apples and visiting the market or head out to Avon Gardens to experience the beauty of more than 200 variations of plants across five acres. Make sure to check hours at both locations, especially during the winter months, as Avon Gardens closes in early November.
Another educational program offered in the county is through the Hendricks County Recycling Center. You can learn about waste reduction, recycling, reuse, landfills and hazardous waste.
Physical activity is just as important as academic knowledge and creativity. Spend the afternoon on one of Hendricks County’s many parks and trails.
Hendricks County also has plenty of indoor options for exercise at Urban Air Adventure Park and Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park, both in Plainfield. Slick City Action Park in Brownsburg offers a Homeschool Social program, helping students make new friends, work together and get their activity in while they’re at it.
