Explore the World of Fiber Arts at Carole Makes in Plainfield Indiana
Published on
I’ve recently learned how to knit and still have a long way to go but have always been impressed with those who can sew, knit, crochet and create in other fiber art areas. It’s a great way to slow down, allow your creativity to flow and even make items for home or as a gift.
Carole Ricketts Corey got her start attending the Plainfield Farmers Market, first with a pop-up booth and then with her newly purchased and renovated yarn truck. She eventually opened her own brick-and-mortar location, Carole Makes, earlier this year.
Whether you’re new in the fiber arts world or are looking to expand, Carole Makes offers what you need.
Carole's Story
Carole didn’t learn how to knit or crochet until her college years at Goshen College. During the hard Indiana winters, it wasn’t uncommon to see students making hats, mittens, scarves and more.
She wanted to get involved, and after learning to crochet from her mom, she fell in love with the hobby and began exploring every type of fiber art out there.
Shop For Fiber
Carole Makes is one of a few shops in the state to carry spinning wheels and looms. In fact, they are the only shop in Indiana that carries e-spinners (electric spinners vs. the traditional wheels).
If you’re looking for a variety of hand-dyed yarns, fabrics and the tools to do any fiber art project, you will find it here.
Take A Class
The Plainfield, Indiana, shop offers knitting and crochet classes, spinning, weaving, needlepoint, cross stitch, embroidery and needle felting.
Watch for the monthly calendar on social media and sign up to learn how to spin, make a crocheted stuffed animal and more.
Carole Makes Mascot
A visit to the store might include a run-in with Ray, one of Carole Makes' angora rabbits. She raises them for their fiber – as soft as a cashmere sweater – and occasionally gives them a haircut to create material for spinning.
Outside of donating their super-soft hair, the spoiled employees are hand-fed Cheerios and serve as the official mascot of the Carole Makes shop.
Traveling Yarn Truck
Carole still takes the yarn truck to festivals and events all over the country. The festivals often offer classes and workshops, food trucks and more.
Not only are all the customers avid fiber arts fans, but she also brings supplies that are hard to come by in some areas while traveling to some of the largest yarn festivals in the nation.
