Published on
If you’re a fan of classic TV, vintage toys, retro diners or other pop culture spectacles, Hendricks County, Indiana, has so much to offer.
From a full-blown Doctor Who retail store and museum to a cafe straight out of Mayberry, there’s a lot of quirky, nostalgic fun packed just west of Indy.
Here's a list of local stops that will take you down memory lane:
Who North America
The only retail store and museum this side of the pond dedicated entirely to the British television show Doctor Who is located right here in Camby, Indiana.
Who North America is a sci-fi sanctuary filled with collectibles, props and rare merchandise that would impress any Time Lord. It’s a must-visit for Whovians who want a photo with a full-size Tardis.
Mayberry Cafe
Fans of The Andy Griffith Show will feel right at home in downtown Danville at the Mayberry Cafe. Grab lunch or dinner at this charming restaurant that's filled with 60s-style decor, plays reruns of the classic show, and even has a replica squad car parked out front.
It's like stepping back in time to a simpler era and hearty comfort food like Aunt Bee’s famous fried chicken.
D's Vintage Toys
Walking into D's Vintage Toys is like walking into your childhood. Located in The Shops at Perry Crossing, this hidden gem is packed with action figures, board games, lunchboxes and pop culture relics from the 70s, 80s, 90s and beyond.
The store is great for vintage collectors, but equally enjoyable for those looking to rediscover the past. You may even have the chance to get that toy you begged your parents for as a kid.
Gilley’s Antique & Decorator Mall
For a deeper dive into the past, visit Gilley’s Antique & Decorator Mall in Plainfield.
With more than 300 vendor booths, you’ll find everything from vintage signage and movie posters to rare vinyl, retro furniture and plenty of other collectibles. This place is huge, so plan to spend most of the day on your treasure hunt.
Press Play Gaming Lounge
Visitors from all around the country make sure to visit Press Play Gaming Lounge in Brownsburg whenever they travel to or pass through central Indiana. This modern arcade lounge features dozens of console games, virtual reality and even a Foam Wars area.
Competitive gamers can enjoy the best technology and some delicious food, while more casual players have plenty of immersive options to choose from.
Oasis Diner
No pop culture tour of Hendricks County would be complete without grabbing a bite to eat at the retro Oasis Diner. This authentic 1950s-style diner, restored and relocated to downtown Plainfield, looks like it's straight out of Grease, with seating that puts you right next to Danny Zuko.
Recently recognized as one of America's best road trip eateries, the diner serves up hand-breaded pork tenderloins, classic milkshakes, homemade sodas and all the nostalgic classics.
The Royal Theater
Visiting Downtown Danville is truly a Back to the Future experience. No one would be shocked to see Doc Brown working on the old clock at the historic Hendricks County Courthouse (which visitors said reminds them of the movie) or Marty McFly passing by the Royal Theater on his skateboard across the street.
This theater dates back to 1914, featuring a vintage marquee and old film projectors. Today, it shows both new family-friendly releases and classics from every generation, with prices to match that era.
Books & Brews
Books & Brews Brownsburg is an exciting trifecta of a used bookstore, cozy taproom and friendly game hall. Enjoy a good book while sipping on a library-themed brew like the "Charlie and the Chocolate Stout" or the popular "Clifford the Big Red Ale."
Bring some friends or the entire family and choose from hundreds of board games or a trivia night while you try the craft beers on tap. If you genuinely enjoy this spot, you can join the Mug Club for a one-time fee of $75 and get lifetime discounts and priority access to new products.
