Copper Top Customs Brings New Life to Clayton Indiana
Published on
If you haven't visited Clayton, Indiana, in a while, you are missing out!
Jeff and Cynthia Harbison own numerous buildings in downtown Clayton, and they have breathed new life into the town. All while preserving the town's history.
Central to the revitalization, the Harbinsons opened Copper Top Customs in 2020. This unique shop has been a true labor of love for this hardworking couple. Here are several reasons why you should plan a visit to Copper Top Customs.
The History
Formerly a chicken processing plant, the building now occupied by Copper Top Customs maintains a lot of the town's history. Minus the chickens!
If you love history, don't miss the hearth room. Also, be sure to ask Cynthia about the historical significance found within the walls (literally and figuratively) and she will be happy to give you all the details!
The Building
The Harbisons have painstakingly worked to bring the building back to its original condition, preserving and repurposing as much of the building and its contents as possible.
You can see the original elevator mechanism as well as wood beams, beadboard and the smallest pieces of salvageable materials used throughout the shop. An impressive expansion was added in 2021, and there are plans for even more growth, inside and out.
Copper Top
It's hard to miss the impressive copper ceiling that gives the shop its name. Jeff works in metals, and the couple had both become fond of copper, making it an ideal material to restore the ceiling.
The many unique chandeliers throughout the shop also add to the eclectic atmosphere that beautifully bridges old and new.
Furniture, Home Decor & Seasonal Items
Hardly a traditional antique shop, Copper Top Customs is a treasure trove of antiques and vintage items. Inventory changes regularly, making each trip a new experience to find hidden gems and unique gifts.
More than 30 vendors have sections within the store showcasing furniture, home decor and seasonal items from various eras and design styles.
Clothing and Jewelry
You can even find stylish clothing at Copper Top Customs.
Peruse the jewelry, scarves, purses and other accessories on sale to complete the perfect ensemble.
Handmade Art & Other Works
Copper Top Customs also showcases creations by several local artisans.
Handmade cards, painted canvases, colorful glass and carved wood are just a few of the one-of-a-kind creations you will find, making Copper Top Customs the perfect place to shop for gifts.
Food Items
While you are admiring the architecture and browsing for must-have items, why not pick up some edible goodies too?
Copper Top Customs sells chocolatey delights, old-fashioned stick candy, spices and noodles, as well as an array of Amish jams, jellies, relishes and so much more.
