What to Expect at an Indiana Lyons Basketball Game
Published on
Here in Hendricks County, Indiana, we are very fortunate to have an American Basketball Association (ABA) team that is based in Danville -- the Indiana Lyons. We're on the doorstep of the 2026-27 Indiana Lyons season, so now is a great time to learn about them!
I have followed the Lyons since their inception, and I worked for the team for several seasons, so I've got some pretty good insight to share with you about what to expect at a Lyons game.
What is the ABA?
Today's ABA is a relaunch of the original ABA that brought us teams like the Indiana Pacers, Denver Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs, along with players like Julius Erving, Wilt Chamberlain and George McGinnis. The league is comprised of more than 150 teams across North America and Japan, and it also boasts ABA Mexico, ABA Puerto Rico and ABA Australia.
ABA basketball has unique rules that promote a high-scoring, quick-tempo game. The current league even plays with a red, white and blue basketball like the original league did.
Unique ABA Rules
The ABA's unique rules make for a fast-paced, high-scoring game that's full of excitement and action. The most noticeable thing is the 3D Light, which is a rotating, flashing red light at the scorers' table that fires up under special circumstances during games.
A few things can trigger the 3D Light during a game, but most often, it's when a team loses possession of the ball in the backcourt. When the light starts flashing, a point is added to any field goal that's made while the light is on. A typical two-point shot is now worth three points, a three-pointer is worth four points and if a player sinks a half-court shot, it's five points.
Who Are the Indiana Lyons?
Owned by Hendricks County residents and business owners Tyrone and Deborah Brown, the Indiana Lyons are entering their ninth season in the ABA. In their first eight, they have won more than 70 percent of the time and captured the ABA Championship in 2022-23 on the 50th anniversary of the Indiana Pacers winning the ABA title.
The Indiana Lyons roster is comprised of players from Indiana and Illinois, many who have played college or international basketball. The Lyons pride themselves on family-friendly game days where fans of all ages can enjoy a fun, inexpensive experience.
Game Days
The 2026-27 season begins Saturday, Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. at home, and all 10 home games are either on Saturdays at 5 p.m. or on Sundays at 4 p.m. through February. They play their home games in Bosstick Gym located at 49 N. Wayne St. in Danville, Indiana, and fans will find free parking in lots directly across the street and along the surrounding streets.
Tickets are just $10 a person, with discounts offered to children, seniors, military veterans, active military and first responders. Season tickets are available for purchase, too, with an even bigger savings. All seating is general admission.
Access to the Players
This is my favorite part of minor league sports. As the Lyons players warm up, kids frequently line up courtside for hand-slaps -- and the players are happy to oblige.
After games, fans pour onto the court, and the players stay and chat with them, shake their hands, sign autographs and pose for photos, including a big group photo at center court with anyone who wants to join them. It's a really fun, rewarding relationship between the players and fans.
