I’ve always wanted to have a green thumb. The joy and peace that comes from working in the garden, watching vegetables or flowers grow and getting in touch with nature seems like a fabulous way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Unfortunately, I struggle in that department and the simple house plant is barely surviving in my home. But there is hope for me and you.

The Hendricks County Gardening for All Ages event presented by our very own Hendricks County Master Gardeners is for everyone and whether you are looking for new techniques, solving a mystery surrounding the growth of your peonies or learning the very basic facts of your first garden, this event at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds and Conference Complex has you covered.

Vendors and community groups will be on hand with garden décor, tools, bird-watching supplies and more.

They’ll give away free vegetable and flower seeds and trees from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Free trees range from Shagbark Hickory to American Plum and are often difficult to find at your local nursery.

Here’s where all the questions are answered.

Select from a class or two with a topic that best suits your needs and learn everything from what to do about uninvited guests damaging your garden to the newest techniques, such as indoor garden towers to help your garden grow year-round.

3. Help Desk

If you don’t have time to attend a class or feel like your questions haven’t quite been answered after chatting with gardening enthusiasts, the Master Gardeners will man a booth specifically to help you find a solution to your problem.

Master Gardeners have extensive training and experience through Purdue University Extension programs and projects, and their mission is to help others find joy in gardening.

When they say it’s for all ages, they truly mean all ages can enjoy this event. There’s a children’s area with fun educational activities. They are getting their hands in the dirt planting seeds, making crafts, sitting in for story time and even singing and dancing.

Not only are the young ones occupied while you shop for your favorite garden gear, they might catch the bug themselves!

5. It's FREE

The best part is this event offers free admission, free classes, free seeds and trees, free children’s entertainment and even free parking.

Bring money for your gardening purchases and for the food truck outside to grab lunch but everything else won’t cost a dime.

Gardening for All Ages is at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds and Conference Complex from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 26.
