Lunch, Laughter & Lanes: An Accessible Adventure in Brownsburg Indiana

Some of the best adventures don't require months of planning, just good company and a destination with something for everyone. That's exactly what my husband, James, my best friend, Carrie and I found during a day trip to Brownsburg, Indiana.

From lunch at Tasty Oishi and a stroll along the B&O Trail to bowling at Pinheads and drinks at Alley's Alehouse, our day was packed with great food, laughter and unforgettable memories. As someone who lives with Spina Bifida, accessibility is always part of my planning, but this adventure proved that the best outings are the ones everyone can enjoy together.

Fueling the Adventure

A spread of Japanese dishes on a wooden table at Tasty Oishi, featuring shrimp ramen, spicy pork ramen, chicken hibachi noodles, takoyaki topped with bonito flakes, crispy gyoza with dipping sauce, and an iced coffee.

Every great adventure starts with good food, and Tasty Oishi was the perfect way to kick off our day in Brownsburg. With three of us around the table, sharing was the obvious choice.

We sampled everything from Takoyaki, an octopus appetizer I probably never would have ordered on my own, to crispy crab rangoon, flavorful gyoza and steaming bowls of ramen. The portions were generous, and every dish was delicious, but the Takoyaki and crab rangoon were immediate favorites, while the spicy pork ramen stole the show for my husband.

Exploring the B&O Trail

Cyclists travel along the paved B&O Trail through a wooded corridor on a sunny summer day in Brownsburg.

After lunch, we hit the B&O Trail to burn off a few calories before our next stop. With more than eight miles of paved trail through Brownsburg, it was the perfect place to enjoy the fresh air before the rain rolled in.

I even challenged my husband to a race. He declined... probably because he knew he'd get the last laugh at Pinheads.

Let the Games Begin at Pinheads

A woman using a wheelchair releases a bowling ball down the lane with an adaptive bowling ramp at Pinheads in Brownsburg.

Our final stop was Pinheads, where my husband quickly turned adaptive bowling into an engineering experiment. He carefully lined up the adaptive ramp for every shot, only for me to bump it with my wheelchair, sending his perfectly calculated plan in a completely different direction.

Despite his best efforts, I still managed an 88. Pinheads also offers an accessible arcade. But after getting smoked on the bowling lanes, I wasn't about to risk losing twice in one afternoon.

Drinks at the Alehouse

Cocktails at Alley's Alehouse in Brownsburg

We wrapped up the afternoon with drinks at Alley's Alehouse, where my best friend apparently ordered the secret ingredient to bowling success.

I'm still convinced there was something in that drink because the self-proclaimed horrible bowler absolutely smoked both of us.
