Enjoy Art & Community at Plein Air Paint Out in Danville Indiana

During my family's first August in Hendricks County, Indiana, a couple of years ago, we came across Gallery on the Square's Annual Plein Air Paint Out event completely by accident.

We visited Ellis Park in Danville on that Saturday in August and ran into multiple artists painting at various spots around the park. It was fun to see the artists in action. Little did I know I had stumbled upon a great community event!

Now I've kept it on our calendar, Aug. 8 this year, and we try to make it an annual tradition!

What is Plein Air Paint Out?

Each year, Gallery on the Square hosts this one-day event where artists of all ages and abilities paint landscapes throughout Danville. It's a nod to the French expression meaning in the open air, and this year will be Danville's 9th annual Plein Air Paint Out. 

Plein Air Paint Out brings artists and spectators out for the day. While artists create a masterpiece, the spectators can watch the process. There are also family events in the afternoon before the awards ceremony. 

Divisions & Awards

The event includes four divisions: professional, non-professional, teen (13-17 years old) and youth (12 and under). Each division winner will receive a cash prize. 

You can register to participate up until the day of the event, though there is a discount for registering early. The Gallery on the Square often hosts workshops for participants, which is a great way to learn and build community with other artists participating in the event. 

Something for Everyone

Not an artist? You should still add it to your August calendar. You can watch the artists at work around Danville, vote for your favorite piece and enjoy the family-friendly activities. 

You can enjoy Summer Porch Fest and Family Fun Art Day, all in Downtown Danville, on the same day. 

Family Fun Day

While the whole day is filled with family fun, The Gallery on The Square creates an afternoon where kids can participate in a few guided art projects too. 

In the afternoon, starting at 1 p.m., art stations will be available for kids to paint pet rocks, create friendship bracelets, paper masks and more.
