My family and I have loved and visited Sal’s Famous Pizzeria for years but hadn’t been back since recent changes at the Plainfield, Indiana, location were underway. So, we stopped by for a late lunch to see the impressive new interior.
Whether you’ve been to Sal’s in Plainfield or Brownsburg dozens of times or have never stepped foot in the door, recent renovations inside and out of both restaurants along with the excellent Italian cuisine are certainly worth a future trip.
Here's what to expect:
Salvatore Russo, owner of Sal’s, opened his family-operated restaurant in Plainfield in 1989 with a second location to follow in Brownsburg in 1999.
His goal from the beginning has been to keep “old-world quality” alive for customers, offering fresh ingredients, cooking on an Italian-style hearth and what he calls: simple, honest cooking techniques that have stood the test of time.
Both locations have recently undergone changes but the differences at the Plainfield restaurant are night and day. What used to give off a dark, candlelit vibe is now bright, clean and modern with black and white décor.
There is also outdoor patio seating with lights strung overhead for a romantic, Italian courtyard experience. One thing that hasn’t changed; dozens of photos of Sal and his journey from Italy to Indiana line the walls.

If it’s Italian, chances are you can find a version of it on Sal’s menu. Baked Ziti, Parmigiana, Lasagna and Fettuccini Alfredo are among the most popular. But options range from calzones to sub sandwiches too.
Most importantly, according to Sal, their daily routine includes dough made fresh from scratch, cheeses grated by hand and his specialty sauce prepared with the best ingredients at both restaurants.
I took some of the pickiest eaters out for a late lunch at Sal’s and everyone was able to find something they loved. We shared a pizza, tried several items off the appetizer menu and finished the meal off with delicious Tiramisu.
What stood out the most, however, was the friendly, casual environment. Dress up for a couple’s night out on the town and enjoy spaghetti or parmigiana or spend the afternoon with the family over pizza and a glass of wine. Everyone is welcome at Sal’s.
