Hendricks County has a robust parks and trails system and it’s continuing to grow with the unveiling of Plainfield Indiana’s Echo Hollow Nature Park, formally Sodalis Nature Park.
You may have visited the trails, fished in the pond or attended an event at the park, tucked away, just south of I-70 but the Town of Plainfield has big plans in 2024 and beyond to develop the nearly 2,000 acres in Guilford Township.
A Day at Echo Hollow
Currently, Echo Hollow Nature Park features more than 5 miles of trails, a 5.5-acre pond with fishing pier and picnic areas on 310 acres. The natural wetlands and wildlife habitats give visitors a chance to see a variety of animals while enjoying the outdoors.
A Bat Habitat
Like Sodalis, the name Echo Hollow is a nod to the endangered Indiana Brown Bat who uses the land as their natural habitat. The name refers to the way bats use ultrasound and echoes to guide their path.
Educational Opportunities
The Town of Plainfield hopes to build upon the educational opportunities at Echo Hollow such as nature walks, classes on how to build a bat house or tips on wildlife preservation and other community events. Through their actions, visitors will see efforts in sustainability and conservation.
In 2024, construction was completed on the public restroom facility at the front of the park. Up next will be the construction of Lake Loop Trail encircling Sodalis Lake, giving visitors a unique view of the scenic beauty surrounding the pond.
Future Plans
They aren’t stopping there. Town of Plainfield leaders envision something similar to a state park like McCormick’s Creek and others. Possible ideas include a campground, nature center, entertainment space and more. So stay tuned for more improvements, new amenities and more in the years ahead.
