Your Guide to Blue Heron Park in Avon Indiana

Blue Heron Park, formally known as Avon Town Hall Park, is an 83-acre park located directly behind Avon Town Hall.

Park amenities include a 9-acre, catch-and-release fishing pond, trails, two children’s playgrounds, outdoor ping pong table, par 4 disc golf course, Trak 36, an RC track, and more has made this park a popular outdoor recreation attraction in Hendricks County since 2002.

Here's everything you need to know about this great park, including some recent and upcoming changes.

Trails & Wayfinding System

A trail sign and a walking trail at Blue Heron Park

Blue Heron Park offers more than two miles of scenic trails throughout the park including my two personal favorites: the Heron Lake Loop Trail and the Heron Tale Trail, a forested story book trail that extends from the park to the Avon-Washington Township Public Library. Through funding from the Parks Foundation of Hendricks County, Blue Heron Park recently added a wayfinding trail system.

Every trail is now named and marked with a colored line, making it more accessible for guests to find and recognize every trail. Trail maps can be accessed by scanning the QR codes on the trail signs and Blue Heron Park's trail system will eventually connect to the new Avon Civic Center/ Riverwalk District and Pickle Patch courts once both are completed.

Disc Golf Course

One of the most popular Blue Heron Park attractions is the 18-hole disc golf course that was completed in 2006. The first "tee" is located next to the old horse barn and time capsule with the other baskets around the park offering scenic views of the lake, prairies and of the forested areas.

All of the holes throwing areas have signage giving details of each hole including the distance to each basket.

Fishing

Pier overlooking lake at Blue Heron Park

Blue Heron Park has three fishing spots located throughout the park, including the 9-acre Town Hall Park Lake, a small pond located to the east of the lake and the 3-acre Sycamore Lake.

All of these fishing areas are catch and release only and require a valid Indiana State Fishing License to fish with the exception of Free Fishing Days. Swimming, wading, ice fishing and ice skating is prohibited on all waterways.

Blue Heron Park is home to Trak 36, a free community RC track. This compacted dirt track features hills and ramps perfect for any battery-operated remote-controlled vehicle. The track is open to the public and offers an elevated covered drivers' deck.

The park also offers outdoor Ping Pong tables for the public to enjoy as well as a bocce court. Near the Ping Pong tables, you can find some picnic tables and a covered shelter pavilion to enjoy lunch or a snack, and the park even provides paddles and balls to borrow. Bocce balls are not provided at the bocce court.

Playgrounds

The large playground structure at Blue Heron Park

Blue Heron Park has two separate children's play areas. The first playground features a multi-level play structure with slides, climbing features including a rock wall and zip line and swing set. I love this play area structure because kids of all ages can play together on it.

There is another playground located at the north end of the park. This area features a small toddler area with two slides, a larger structure for older kids with slides, a climbing tunnel and monkey bars. A planned future phase of improvements at Blue Heron Park will include playground redevelopments and enhancements.
